Latvia's Independence Resoration Day is celebrated at a time when spring is in full bloom and greenery surrounds the parks and streets of Riga. Therefore, on May 4, 2024 from 12:00 Riga residents and guests are invited to the creative workshop for the whole family "Create a green Latvia!" in Arkadijas Park, Vērmanes Garden and Latgales Park.
Riga is a green-minded city. This is confirmed by the experience of previous years, which shows that planting workshops are one of the most requested and favorite activities at the May 4 holiday events. In the creative workshop, visitors will be able to assume the roles of foresters and gardeners, learn interesting facts about trees and plants, plant a tree or a gorgeous flower in a pot, which later could be replanted into a garden, backyard, field or forest. This year, visitors will be offered to plant spruce, Japanese larch, pine, oak, linden, etc. Seedlings, grown in Latvian State forest nurseries. In addition to planting trees, workshop visitors will be able to sow meadow flower seeds or plant flowers in special coir pots.
Oak is widely described in Latvian folklore, it is a symbol of positive strength, masculinity and steadfastness. Most of the longest living trees in Latvia are oaks. One of the most beautiful and noble trees growing in Latvia is the red oak, which is also sometimes called sharp leaf, Canadian or northern oak. Japanese larch, or karamatsu in Japanese, is a species of larch native to Japan. This larch is an introduced species in Latvia, its soft needles are blue-green in summer, and bright yellow in autumn. On the other hand, spruce is one of the most widespread tree species in Latvia. Experienced craftsmen know how to find even the so-called "resonance" spruce with a particularly sonorous wood, which is used to make musical instruments.
