The folklore studio "Banga" invites you to the presentation concerts of its debut album "TALKA". The album will reveal the well-known Latvian joint cleaning traditions in different senses and relevance nowatoday. The album was recorded by collecting traditional Latvian music from different regions of Latvia over several years, as well as studying the tradition of joint work from its practical side - as a joint gathering for the purpose of doing old and not so old farm chores.
There are many elements in Latvian folklore that express the philosophy of joint work embodied in the concept of talka. The album highlights it with bourdon polyphony (music in which a stretched vowel is often sung under the melody), bright interplay up to five-part singing, as well as with specially selected lyrics from joit workers, landlords and other perspectives.
The concerts will take place on September 23 at 19.00 at the wooden building renovation center "Koka Rīga" (Krāsotaju Street 12) and on September 24 at 16.00 at the Culture and Recreation Center "Imanta" (Anniņmuižas boulevard 29). The presentation of the album will take place in a minimalistic aesthetic, emphasizing traditional materials and creating an allegory of the relationship between joint worker and landlords through the interaction of the audience and musicians.
This is the first self-made studio album of the folklore studio "Banga". As the formation of the group can be considered the spring of 2016, when like-minded friends who grew up in the folklore environment got together and wanted to sing and celebrate traditions according to their vision of the world at that time. During these six years, "Banga" has grown both in number and in ambition. Currently, folklore studio gives all of its efforts to read the nature, meaning and expression of folklore materials as accurately as possible, creating conceptual projects that, with the help of Latvian traditional culture, allow us to talk about important topics in the modern world, such as integration, identity, initiation, etc. This is how the concert program "Dibenā" and the Latvian Jewish music program "Džingale" were born. "Banga" is also working on creating a disc of foreign dances popular in Latvia, but "TALKA" is currently at the epicenter of events. Last year, a MV was presented for the song "Kur, Jumīti, žavjis" from the debut album, which was made in collaboration with the contemporary dance choreographer Jānis Putniņš and allows the audience to experience the imaginative journey of transformation from an individual to a community, MV will be shown at the album presentation concerts. The album will be freely available on all popular music streaming platforms at the end of September.
Tickets for the concerts will be available at the venues before the start of the concerts. Ticket fee – 5.00 euros.
The project was implemented with the help of the crowdfunding website projektubanka.lv, the concerts are organized by the Culture Center "Iļguciems" and the Culture and Leisure Center "Imanta" of the Association of Culture Institutions of Riga Municipality, Folk Art Center "Ritums", the wooden building renovation center "Koka Rīga". and supported by the beer workshop "Labietis".
