Only for three evenings, from February 24th to February 26th, in the heart of Riga's Old Town — Town Hall Square — visitors are invited to experience the light and sound installation 'Love and War' from 6 PM to 11 PM.
"'Love and War' is a documentary, visually acoustic work about the war in Ukraine. It consists of more than 120 poetic drawings and animations, based on the artists interviews conducted in Ukraine in the autumn of 2023.
The art work portrays six ordinary Ukrainians and their life stories during the war, answering the question: how has the war affected their relationships with people they love the most?
Love stories during the war are both tragic and humorous, surprising, and resilient. Most importantly, they offer a glimpse into people's lives; lives similar to yours and mine. These are ordinary people with ordinary worries and thoughts, living in extreme conditions.
The drawings shown in the projections were drawn in real-time in Ukraine, depicting real places and real people.
"The theme of this artwork is love. The news are flooded with stories about battle tactics, arms donations, and politics surrounding Ukraine. However, we rarely have the opportunity to look at what it’s like to live under such circumstances. That’s exactly what I asked Halina, Aleksandr, Maryna, Roman, Yulia, and Maryna. More specifically, I asked them how the war has affected their closest relationships — relationships with their spouses, friends, or partners. With those they love most. It’s a very simple question, one that I believe anyone could resonate with. I hope you will find value in their answers. And that you will continue asking."
