On 23–24 October 2025, Riga became the European centre of Art Nouveau research, hosting the international scientific conference “The Diversity of Art Nouveau in a Regional Context.” The event brought together 27 renowned Art Nouveau scholars and experts from 17 countries, highlighting Riga’s importance as a metropolis of Art Nouveau within the European cultural landscape.
The conference explored the interpretations and regional variations of Art Nouveau, uncovering new perspectives in architecture, applied, and visual arts.
Among the distinguished participants were Paul Greenhalgh (UK), art and design historian and curator, and Pekka Korvenmaa (Finland), art and design historian, along with leading specialists from Austria, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary, and other countries. Latvia was represented by Dr. arch. Agrita Tipāne, Mag. art. Inese Baranovska, Dr. habil. art. Eduards Kļaviņš, Dr. art. Edīte Parute, Dr. art. Ilona Audere, and other local researchers.
At the end of the first conference day, participants attended the launch of Paul Greenhalgh’s latest book, “Art Nouveau: The Architecture of Modern Life.” The author discussed the creation process, inspirations, and the book’s role in promoting and researching Art Nouveau. Guests had the opportunity to talk to the author, purchase the book, and receive a signed copy.
Over two days, the conference offered insights into current research illuminating the richness and diversity of Art Nouveau in Europe, emphasizing its creativity, originality, and local character. Participants also enjoyed a cultural program, including museum visits and guided tours of Riga’s Art Nouveau architectural landmarks.
The conference took place in the Riga City Council Chamber and was livestreamed online.
The event was organized by the Riga Municipality’s Association of Cultural Institutions and the museum Riga Art Nouveau Centre, with the support of the Riga City Council and its Department of Education, Culture and Sports.
The conference provided a unique opportunity to explore the multifaceted nature of Art Nouveau while promoting Riga’s cultural heritage and international visibility.
