In the exhibition hall "Rīga Art Space" on September 29 at 17.00 Valdis Muktupāvels lecture on Latvian folk instrument. In a lecture at the "Latvian musical instruments" exhibition, Valdis Muktupāvels will share stories and pictures about the various Latvian folk instruments, their visual qualities and sound properties.
Valdis Muktupāvels is an ethnomusicologist, composer and musician, Doctor of Arts, professor at the University of Latvia and corresponding member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. One of the main promoters of the folklore movement in Latvia and the study of traditional music. Author of several books and many scientific articles.
His researches on traditional instruments, collected in the book "Folk music instruments in Latvia" have served as the main source of inspiration for artists Modris Svilāns and Kristians Brekte, as well as curator Augusta Petre, to create the exhibition "Latvian musical instruments ". The exhibition confirms one of the theses expressed in the book - the importance of traditional instruments today has not decreased, but increased, and they can still open new horizons of musical expression to the public, as well as inspire interpretations.
The experimental laboratory "Latvian musical instruments" is a visual art and sound project dedicated to folk instruments, their history and influences, as well as their contemporary creation. The initiators of the laboratory are the tandem of artists Kristians Brekte and Modris Svilāns, in cooperation with the curator Auguste Petre, while the project is based on the research on Latvian musical instruments carried out by traditional music expert, ethnomusicologist Valdas Muktupāvels. Folk instruments are a wide and important part of traditional culture and people's life, its influence is felt in connection with various rituals and traditions, but it is important that most often the knowledge about the visual and sound characteristics of instruments is passed on orally - by memory, not specific instructions.
