The museum "Riga Art Nouveau Centre" features Ilona Jahimoviča's mirror collection. The exhibition will be on display from 3.12.2024 to 23.02.2025.
The mirror has always been and remains a lady's best friend and undoubtedly makes us actively monitor our appearance, because we want the reflection in it to please us! In ancient times, the hands of refined ladies adorned with truly outstanding design works created by artists, which would please more than one modern woman.
The collection of ancient mirrors of Ilona Jahimoviča, a popular Latvian Radio Fourth Studio and television journalist, can be viewed at the museum "Riga Art Nouveau Centre", surprises with its diversity in terms of both style and materials. The exhibition is on display in the exhibition hall and in five showcases in the museum's basement. The collection tells the story of the wide range of uses of mirrors: both for home use, for placement in the interior, and for "looking after" beauty while traveling - in a small handbag, for taking with you on a walk or to a ball, as well as in a specially designed suitcase, adding the tools necessary for beauty care procedures: various combs, brushes, scissors and files.
The exhibition draws special attention to the variety of mirror decoration techniques and materials: enamel, beads, precious stones, drawings, exquisite embroidery. Decorations with herbariums, turtle carapace, real butterflies and reptile skin also demonstrate the traditions of art and craft of earlier times - using natural materials from the plant and animal kingdom, which would no longer be acceptable in modern understanding.
When looking at the collection, we invite you to pay attention to the mirrors, which are decorated not only from the outside, but also from the side of the mirror user. Those with a luxurious frame, mosaics, flower curls around the silver plane of the mirror – they came from Italy and differ from the traditions of mirror production and design in other parts of Europe.
This exhibition features exhibits that have not been seen elsewhere – a showcase with men's accessories and a showcase of mirrors and open-faced mirrors dedicated to children.
The mirror collection is also complemented by porcelain figurines, old postcards and lithographs. 14. 14., when Saint Valentine's Day is traditionally commemorated, and beauty is captivating, a surprise awaits – an express exhibition, which will reveal the so popular and topical beauty and mirrors in anticipation of this holiday of lovers.
