The museum “Riga Art Nouveau Centre” invites you to the exhibition “Bouquet of Flowers,” which will be on display at the Ģederts Elias Jelgava History and Art Museum in Jelgava from May 21 to September 7. The exhibition introduces floral motifs seen in applied art objects from the Art Nouveau period and is dedicated to the anniversary of the outstanding early 20th-century latvian poet Aspazija.
Spring and summer are the seasons of nature’s splendid blooming. In Art Nouveau art, flowers had a special significance—they adorned interiors, household items, books, postcards, and textiles. The “Bouquet of Flowers” exhibition will showcase applied art objects, interior decorations, dishes, postcards, and embroideries from the museum “Riga Art Nouveau Centre” collection. Visitors will see springtime daffodils, romantic lilies of the valley, lush lilacs, decorative irises, vivid poppies, and water lilies, which are considered a symbol of Latvian Art Nouveau.
The exhibited objects were created during the Art Nouveau period, the early 20th century, in Latvia as well as Germany, Poland, France, and England. Among the diverse exhibition items, notable highlights include Art Nouveau plates with elegant lilies of the valley and lilac decorations once used in the popular “Edinburgh Park” restaurant, porcelain painted at the J. Jaksch & Co. porcelain workshop, a vase with poppies that belonged to writer Pāvils Grūznis, Villeroy & Boch majolica plates, and more.
Traditionally, such exhibitions dedicated to specific flowers were held every summer at the museum “Riga Art Nouveau Centre” for eight consecutive years. This year, a selection from the museum’s collection is exhibited in Jelgava.
The “Bouquet of Flowers” exhibition is open at the Ģederts Elias Jelgava History and Art Museum, Akadēmijas Street 10, Jelgava, until September 7, 2025. The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed on Mondays.
