The Riga Art Nouveau Center Museum invites you to the exhibition “Bouquet of Flowers,” which will be held at the Ģederts Eliass Jelgava History and Art Museum in Jelgava from May 21 to September 7, 2025. The exhibition introduces the floral motifs found in applied arts of the Art Nouveau period and is dedicated to the anniversary of the outstanding early 20th-century Latvian poet Aspazija.
Spring and summer are the seasons of nature’s magnificent blooming. In Art Nouveau art, flowers held special significance, adorning interiors, household objects, books, postcards, and textiles. The exhibition “Bouquet of Flowers” will display applied art objects, interior decorations, dishes, postcards, and embroidery from the collection of the Riga Art Nouveau Center Museum. Visitors will see springtime daffodils, romantic lilies of the valley, vibrant lilacs, decorative irises, bright poppies, and water lilies—considered a symbol of Latvian Art Nouveau.
The exhibited items date from the Art Nouveau period, the early 20th century, and were created in Latvia, Germany, Poland, France, and England. Among the diverse objects, particular highlights include Art Nouveau plates with elegant lily of the valley and lilac decals once used in the popular “Edinburgh Park” restaurant, pieces painted at the J. Jaksch & Co porcelain painting workshop, a vase with poppies that belonged to writer Pāvels Grūns, Villeroy & Boch majolica plates, and more.
Traditionally, such flower-themed exhibitions were held annually at the Riga Art Nouveau Center Museum for eight years. This year, a selection from the museum’s collection is shown in Jelgava.
The exhibition “Bouquet of Flowers” is on view at the Ģederts Eliass Jelgava History and Art Museum, Akademijas Street 10, Jelgava, until September 7, 2025. The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed on Mondays.
