From February 10 to May 25, 2026, the Aleksandrs Čaks Museum, Lāčplēša Street 48-8, will host an exhibition of original handmade books by artist Ērika Māldere, titled “Stories of Books.”
The works displayed in the exhibition were created as reflections on events in Latvia’s cultural sphere. They incorporate various paper materials, natural elements, and fibers, while also showcasing the artist’s bookbinding skills.
An artist’s book (art book) is a work of art—a creative expression that uses the form or function of a book. Illustrated books and original books have a very long history, but the modern concept of the artist’s book, as we know it today, emerged only in the 1950s and 1960s. Since then, this form of artistic expression has continuously evolved and developed. Worldwide, especially in the United States, artist’s books have gained great popularity, with regular exhibitions and events dedicated to them. In Latvia, this art form has been undeservedly overlooked, but through her work and exhibitions, the artist hopes to change that situation.
The art books are made from handmade paper sheets created from recycled paper pulp, abaca fiber, and rhubarb pulp, supplemented with other natural materials. The paper is decorated using eco-printing techniques—plant imprints and improvisations with indigo and blue colors.
