For several years, the visitors of the Pētera Upīša Horticulture Museum have been delighted by the exhibitions prepared by the museum “Riga Art Nouveau Center” dedicated to the theme of flowers. From May 2 this year, visitors will have the opportunity to get to know the magnificent and diverse nature of the poppy flower, depicted in the applied art works of the Art Nouveau period.
The image of the poppy with delicate, curved forms, slender stems and expressive flowers in applied art objects of the Art Nouveau period represents the visual identity of Art Nouveau. Its tantalizing flower and flirtatious buds adorn everyday tableware, sophisticated glassware and show off in fine embroidery, as well as embellish postcards.
At the center of the exhibition are objects from the collection of the museum “Riga Art Nouveau Center” of the Association of Cultural Institutions of Riga Municipality, which are perfectly complemented by several items from a private collection, because the curved lines of the poppy were of interest not only to artists of the Art Nouveau period.
The diverse range of applied art objects in the exhibition is enriched by the catalog "Poppies" (in Latvian and English) prepared by the museum "Riga Art Nouveau Center" and the surrounding environment with the landscape of the gardens of Pētera Upīša Horticultural Museum.
