From 2 September to 30 November 2025, the Riga Porcelain Museum’s Creative Studio (Kalēju iela 9/11) presents an express exhibition by ceramic artist Dace Blūma, titled “On Both Sides of the Border”, showcasing her latest works.
The exhibition explores the border between light and shadow, between solid color and gradient, between decal and brushstroke, between vessel and wall piece. It highlights the creative and technical diversity of porcelain overglaze painting.
Blūma’s new works focus on the use of decals in overglaze decoration—a technique that allows quick and precise application of designs, widely used in industrial porcelain production. A decal is created by screen-printing color onto special paper, which is then transferred onto the surface of a vessel. The artist demonstrates how this method, beyond reproduction, can also serve as a medium for unique, hand-finished artworks, combining collage, screen printing, digital printing, and brush painting.
Dace Blūma (b. 1959) graduated from the Riga School of Applied Arts in 1978 and earned her degree from the Estonian State Art Institute in 1983. She worked at the Riga Porcelain Factory (1983–1994), later as a designer and sculptor at AS Rīgas Porcelāns, and as head of the Valmiera Art School. For twelve years she collaborated with SIA “Dekolserviss”, a porcelain printing company founded on the former factory’s decal department.
Her designs are characterized by structured composition, geometric ornamentation, and ethnographic symbols. Recurrent themes include stylized urban motifs and architectural forms rendered in expressive graphic lines. Today, Blūma continues to work creatively with porcelain—both designing forms and painting in various techniques.
