Music is more than sound – it can be a way of life, a breath, a conversation and the rhythm of a city. Music lives in the streets and clubs, its rhythms merge with the footsteps of everyday life, and over the centuries, voices from different cultures have shaped one of the richest and most distinctive traditions in American music: the blues.
On 21 October at 19:00, the vocal jazz group Assembly Singers invites audiences to discover the wonderful world of the blues at Ave Sol Concert Hall. Known for their spirit of creative exploration and diverse vocal sound, the group will turn its attention this time to the distinctive musical aesthetics of New Orleans and Louisiana.
The singers of Assembly Singers will bring the unique charm of Louisiana blues to life alongside a stellar line-up of musicians: Aleksandrs Tomass Matjussons, who is also the creator and arranger of the programme (piano); Ariana Seviško (guitar, vocals); Pēteris Liepiņš (double bass); Vadims Dmitrijevs (trombone); Sandis Skeranskis (trumpet); and Artis Orubs (percussion).
The piano defines the musical space, while the guitar adds the colours and movement characteristic of the blues. The double bass provides the rhythmic foundation, while the trombone and trumpet bring the distinctive liveliness and spirited character of New Orleans to the sound. The percussion unites these diverse elements in a single pulse, while the voice takes centre stage, using subtle nuances of timbre to help listeners not only hear the music, but feel it.
Alongside the melancholy of the blues, this music is always alive with movement, warmth, energy and joy. It seems to breathe and transform continuously. It tells stories of the human experience – longing and loss, love and loneliness, faith and hope, and the ability to celebrate life.
New Orleans blues is more than a genre – it is a distinctive way of experiencing the world. It is a musical crossroads where the emotional depth of the blues meets the freedom of jazz improvisation, the spirituality of gospel, the energy of rhythm and blues and soul, the pulse of funk, and the diversity of Creole music. This rich blend has created a sound in which the boundaries between genres almost disappear.
