On November 5, 2022, the painter and scenographer Eduard Vītols would have turned 145 years old. In honor of the anniversary, the museum " Riga Art Nouveau Center" will exhibit a new addition to the collection - the watercolor painting "Landscape" by Eduards Vītols, created in 1908. The artist's works from the early period are relatively rare, this watercolor painting is available to a wider audience for the first time. The story about the artwork displayed as part of the series "Museum Stories" will take place on November 4 at 16.00, but the watercolor painting itself will be on display in the museum until December 4.
At the end of last year, the "Riga Art Nouveau Center" museum added to its collection the watercolor painting "Landscape" by Eduard Vītols. The work, small in size, was created around 1908 and depicts a path on the edge of a park on a hillside. The work belongs to the early period of Eduards Vitols' creativity, at that time the author graduated with honors from the Stiglitz Central School of Technical Drawing theater decoration class in St. Petersburg, supplemented his art knowledge in Germany and works as a drawing teacher and theater decorator in St. Petersburg.
Works from this period are relatively rare and are mostly in private collections. The watercolor "Landscape" will be available to a wider audience for the first time on November 4, the day before the artist's birthday. The work will be on display at the museum for a month.
Eduards Kārlis Vītols (1877-1954) is a Latvian painter, scenographer, pedagogue and an important figure in Latvian culture. The artist painted mainly impressionistic landscapes in his work also used watercolor technique, oil, tempera and pastel techniques. From 1918 to 1935, he was the decorator of the Latvian National Opera and created scenography and decorations for countless opera and ballet productions. J. Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly can still be seen on the stage of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet in the stage design and costumes created by Eduard Vītols in 1925. In later years, E. Vītols worked at the Academy of Arts of Latvia, the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Latvia, illustrated books, created meth for furniture, ornaments, porcelain dishes of the Kuznetsov and Jesen factories, and was also an artist at the V. Ķuze sweets factory.
