From November 1 to 30, 2022, the photo exhibition "Monument of Freedom in the Times of Time" can be viewed in the windows of the Riga Culture and Leisure Center "Imanta".
The photo exhibition "Monument of Freedom Through the Ages " will be available 24 hours a day in the display windows of the Riga Culture and Recreation Center "Imanta". The exhibition shows photographs in which the Freedom Monument is shown from different angles and times, standing proudly in its place.
The idea of a monument that would symbolize the creation of the first independent Latvian state in history - the Republic of Latvia - arose soon after gaining national independence. After several competitions, in 1930, the sculpture "Shine like a star" by the sculptor Kārlis Zāle (1888–1942) was chosen. The foundation stone of the monument was laid in 1931, but already on November 18, 1935, it was ceremonially opened by the president of the country, Alberts Kviesis.
Currently, the Freedom Monument is the main symbol of Latvia. Official guests of Latvia - statesmen from different countries - put flowers at the foot of the monument. In moments of commemoration, all the people of Latvia remember the victims of deportation and suffering by creating a carpet of flowers in front of the monument, while foreign tourists look at the powerful sculptural images, trying to see the spirit of Latvia and understand its history.
The exhibition is free for visitors around the clock.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Riga Municipal Agency "Riga Monuments Agency".
