Express exhibition in RIGA PORCELAIN MUSEUM
In the middle of summer, during summer solstice, when the longest day follows the shortest night, Latvians celebrate the Summer Solstice or Jāņi. For centuries all across Latvia during Sommer Solstice Latvians have made bonfires, sung joyous Jāņi songs, danced, cooked and eaten festive treats - pressed cheese, baked pies and home made beer. Dainas or folk songs depict the activities of the Midsummer Day – wreaths interlacing, home decoration, singing and more.
The porcelain artists have revived the tradition of Jāņi by illustrating Midsummer activities and folk songs on porcelain.
The exhibition is supplemented by Latvian folk songs which depict the Jāņi celebration.
