Juta Rindinas solo exhibition “Variācijas par tēmu” will be on display at the Riga Porcelain Museum from April 14 to June 11, 2023.
Artist Juta Rindina calls herself an eclectic and chatty storyteller. Following her stories in porcelain, clay, stoneware is fascinating because they are visually expressive, witty and extraordinary. Although the author very consciously talks about completely everyday topics, she deals with them in an unusual way - she turns everything usual upside down and surprises the unprepared viewer.
Juta Rindina has clearly and convincingly marked her expressive manner in Latvian ceramics. Artist likes to work with compositions from several elements, creating both still life and figurative works. It is the figure - human and animal - that appears most regularly in the author's work. A careful observer will also see various references and parallels with the artist's sources of inspiration in Juta Rindinas visual stories: Chinese culture and its images - dogs, lions, dragons and art history classics, such as the 16th-century Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel and the 15th- 16. century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. The artist likes to change and vary her style depending on her mood.
In the exhibition “Variācijas par tēmu” the artist looks back at her creative activity, the created works of art and interacts with them. A group of works has been revised and supplemented with new elements, another has been brought out of oblivion for many years, while some have been re-created especially for this personal exhibition at the Riga Porcelain Museum. The nature of the images conjured up by the artist radiates joy and sincerity, the shape is dominated by round and curved lines. On the other hand, the subject environment creates a scenographic background, individual details preserve the conditionality of a geometric figure. In the works of Juta Rindina, one-piece forms are combined with delicately designed sculptural details. The author likes to use contrasts: smooth versus rough, shiny versus matte. Ornamental patterns, lines and painterly strokes or splashes are used as the surface treatment. Artist makes full use of the opportunity offered by ceramics to create a shape, as well as to paint and draw on the surface of the material.
Juta Rindina (1953) was born in Riga. She has learned ceramics since the age of ten, when her first teacher was the sculptor Evī Upeniece. Graduated from the Riga Applied Art High School (1972) and the Ceramics Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts (1977). She has been participating in exhibitions in Latvia and abroad since 1977, and has also held several personal exhibitions. The author's works cover the spectrum from garden ceramics, large-format vases and interior objects for architecture to detailed small plastic objects. They are in private collections and museums in Latvia, China, Russia, USA and elsewhere. In 2018, the artist won the gold award in the national category of the Latvian Ceramics Biennale international competition exhibition "Martinson's Award". This is the author's first solo exhibition at the Riga Porcelain Museum.
