From 24 May to 24 June, 2018 an international exhibition “White Nights of St. Petersburg. Historic Graphics” will be held in St. Peter’s Church. The graphics show the City of St. Petersburg as preserved in the works of art stored by the Russia State Museum of Urban Sculpture.
The beauty of St. Petersburg, its harmony and poetics with its many rivers, canals, embankments, bridges, palaces and monuments are particularly outstanding during the White Nights. The City, the main “square” of which is the River Neva, has been a source of inspiration for artists over all its 300 hundred years of history. The surprising and mysterious White Nights have imparted to the City the particular and unrepeatable image of the Northern Venice.
The exhibition “White Nights in St. Petersburg. Historic Graphics” features forty-five copies of 18-20th century graphics that show the glorious image of this northern capital. We face a steady and majestic and at the same time a documental, precise and poetic image of St. Petersburg during the White Nights. Among the earliest and most rare prints of the collection of Russia State Museum of Urban Sculpture are the etchings that show the transportation and hewing of the unique “Thunder Stone” that was turned into a base for the monument of Peter the Great – the famous Bronze Horseman. These outstanding etchings by artist I. F. Schley based on the drawingsby architectY. M. Feltenshow the grandness of Falconet’sintention with a historic precision and great mastery.
The etchings presented in the exhibition are known all over the world – they represent ones created not just by Russian artists, but also show the vision of foreign artists of the prospects, fortresses and small bridges of the most beautiful city of Russia. The graphics displayed in the exhibition let the visitors perceive the beauty, magic and harmony of St. Petersburg, to feel the beauty of this city that enchants everybody and has no city that equals to it during the mysterious White Nights.
