From 24 January until 23 March in Riga Art Nouveau Museum hosts the exhibition Building of the Embassy of Latvia to the USA - ALICE PIKE BARNEY STUDIO HOUSE in Washington, D.C.
The exhibition provides information on a significant historic site – the studio house of philanthropist and painter Alice Pike Barney. As a culture heritage building this house has been included in the National Register of Historic Places of District Columbia. The construction of the house started in 1902 following famous architect Waddy B. Wood’s design and was completed in 1903. The owner of the building Alice Pike Barney (1857 – 1931) had intended and extensively used the building for hosting Washington culture events – it was used as a site for concerts and theatre performances and frequented by well-known culture representatives, artists, diplomats and politicians.
Before the building was acquired by the Latvian state it belonged to the Smithsonian Institution to which it was bequeathed by Alice Pike Barney’s daughters after the painter’s death. Since 2005, when the restoration of the interior was completed, the building has served as the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia to the USA.
The exhibition has been created in co-operation with the Embassy of Latvia to the USA and Smithsonian Institution. It is supported by the Embassy of Latvia to the USA and souvenir shop Jugendstila paviljons.
