On June 17 this year, the exhibition “ЛАВ = LOVE” of the Riga Photography Biennale 2022 will open its doors in the Intro hall of the exhibition hall “Riga Art Space”, which will provide an insight into the three private collections of photographs, postcards and slides. The exhibition will be open until the end of the biennial on July 10.
The exhibition “ЛАВ = LOVE” provides an insight into the private collections of Andrejs Strokins, Irēna Bužinska and Bolderaja's group, which were formed by collecting material confirming the life of their time, but later seemingly superfluous, abandoned material. These are photographs, postcards and slides, which include countless moments of once-in-a-lifetime moments, memorable events and positive emotions.
The exhibition "ЛАВ = LOVE" is largely related to the phylocardiography - collection of postcards - but the terminology has not yet given a name to the collection of memories, which is currently the most common and massive, namely, capturing moments of personal life. From today's point of view, what is fixed in these images can be perceived as a multi-layered material open to interpretation for new constructions of cultural memory, ” notes Inga Brūvere, the curator of the exhibition and the director of the Riga Photography Biennale.
On June 30, at 6 pm, the theme of the exhibition will be expanded by a lecture by Irēna Bužinska, one of the authors of the collection, entitled “Photo Postcard as a Field of Creative Experiments in the 20th Century: Staging, Editing, Coloring”. The lecture will provide an insight into the history of the development of photographic postcards, paying special attention to creative, also amusing examples of experiments in the field of staging, editing and coloring, from the turn of 19th to the 20th century till the 60s of 20th century.
