From 7 May to 6 June St. Peter’s Church of Riga is housing a unique exhibition of paintings FROM ONE SIDE OF THE HEAVEN by painters Jāzeps Pīgoznis, Jānis Streičs and Gundega Rancāne – three outstanding personalities united by painting and originating from Latgale region of Latvia
Jāzeps Pīgoznis was born on 15 September, 1934 in Odumāni village of Ružina parish near Rēzekne. He has studied at Jānis Rozentāls’ Riga Secondary School of Art, graduated from the Painting School of the Academy of Art of Latvia. The painter has been participating in exhibitions since 1958. A member of the Artists’ Association of Latvia since 1964.
In oil painting he is known for his excellent landscapes. He strives for a generalized revealing of the image of nature in realistically grasped landscapes and views of small towns. Each painting has been elaborated to its perfection reflecting harmony and Latvian mentality. The painter has held more than 25 solo exhibitions in Riga and regions of Latvia as well as in Bremen, Moscow and Norway. His paintings are owned by Latvian National Museum of Art and Artists’ Association of Latvia, Rēzekne Art Museum, Wroclaw Medal Art Museum in Poland, Kazanlika Art Gallery in Bulgaria, Belarus State Art Gallery in Minsk, State Art Gallery in Perma, Russia and elsewhere as well as in private collections in Latvia and abroad.
Jānis Streičs was born on 26 September, 1936 in Anspoki village of Preiļi parish near Daugavpils. He has learnt in Rēzekne Pedagogical School where the teacher of drawing encouraged him to continue his studies, however he decided to devote his life to theatre and later film industry. He has graduated from the Theatre Direction Section of the Theatre Faculty at the State Conservatory of Latvia. Later painter Jānis Anmanis, having learnt about Streičs’ hobby, urged him to restart painting.
In his creative work Streičs is very versatile and enjoys painting in oil. The landscapes of his native Latgale region are dominated by colour harmony shown with deep and true love. The painter has been participating in exhibitions and plain-airs for almost ten years. He has had solo exhibitions in Riga, Rēzekne, Daugavpils and other places of Latvia.
Gundega Rancāne was born on 28 June, 1973 in Makašāni village of Rēzekne district. She has finished Rēzekne Secondary School of Applied Art and continued her studies in the Painting School of the Art Academy of Latvia with Aleksejs Naumovs and Kaspars Zariņš and up to the Master’s programme (2000).
“I will never stop wondering about the nature of Latvia across the seasons – there are millions of colours, textures, playing of lights and shadows, sounds and smells... . Either a lake or a blossoming maple, or frost cannot be seen in the same way twice.” The artist’s first solo exhibition took place in Rēzekne Museum of Culture History. It was followed by exhibitions in Rīga, Daugavpils and elsewhere in Latvia as well as in Helsinki, Brussels and Warsaw. Her paintings are in the collections of Daugavpils Museum, Rēzekne Museum and private collections in Latvia, USA, Australia, Germany, Sweden, France, Belgium, Poland, Canada, Finland and Israel.
