From 22 January till 16 February Riga St.Peter’s Church will host the exhibition of paintings EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVES by a painting classic, outstanding lanscape painter and recognized artist Jānis Gunārs Kalnmalis who will celebrate a life anniversary this year
Kalnmalis is one of the few contemporary artists who paints in nature and does it not only in Latvia, but also in other places of Europe. The exhibition EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVES features the collection of the painter’s 60 latest pictures which have traditionally been painted with oil on canvas and show European cities, landscapes as well as ports. A significant part of the exhibition is devoted to Latvia. The visitors of the exhibition will have an opportunity to experience the painter’s perspective and become part of the journey.
Jānis Gunārs Kalnmalis was born on 20 June, 1939 in Riga. He has finished Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts as well as graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia where he studied in the class of figural painting conducted by the classics of Latvian art – Eduards Kalniņš, Leo Svemps and Indulis Zariņš. He has been participating in exhibitions since 1967 and has been a member of the Latvian Artists’ Union since 1979.
The artist’s paintings can be found in the collections of the Latvian National Museum of Art, art museums of Latvia and Russia as well as private collections in Europe, USA and Australia. His personal exhibitions have taken place in various towns of Latvia as well as in Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Luxemburg and the Netherlands. He has participated in international open air painting sessions in Luxembourg and Poland.
