From 12 February to 15 March Rīga St. Peter’s Church is hosting an exhibition “Lithuanian Sacral Wooden Sculpture and Wooden Architecture”
The exhibition presents the works of the winners of St Jurgio Wooden Sculpture Competition (2008 – 2012) organized by Veisieja municipality (Lithuania) and photos of Lithuanian wooden churches.
The exhibition features the collection of St. Jurgio Wooden Sculpture Foundation of Veisieja municipality where such well-known Lithuanian artists as Rimantas Zinkevičius, Vytautas Jackūnas, Valentas Butkus, Juozas Videika have created wooden ensembles embodying their interpretation of the Lithuanian myth about St. Jurgio.
Similarly, the exhibition organizers are offering impressive and absolutely surprising and unusual views of the most beautiful Lithuanian churches. The photos have been taken by Raimondas Paknys and the exhibition has been installed following the book “Lithuanian Wooden Churches”. Despite the influence of Western art and regularities of Catholic art the churches are very peculiar and individualistic. The uniqueness can be explained by the history of the church parish, events of local significance, ambitions and artistic taste of the church patrons and founders, phantasy of the craftsmen and their artistic understanding.
