Christmas tree stands, popularly known as Christmas tree legs, are nowadays mostly functional creations, but during the Art Nouveau period they were created as works of art. On December 16 at 16.00 project manager of the museum "Riga Art Nouveau Center" Dzintars Gilba will give a lecture on two different Christmas tree stands made at the beginning of the 20th century in the cycle "Museum stories".
Christmas tree stands, which today are most often simple and functional creations, were designed as works of art during Art Nouveau period. Both the texture of the tree trunk and the flora of the forest could have been reproduced on the surface of the cast iron. Bells, gnomes, iris flowers, rose flowers, burning candles or reciting lines of Christmas carols could also be depicted. Christmas tree legs from metal began to be made in the second half of the 19th century. A jukebox could be built into a particularly modern Christmas tree leg, which, when turned on, would spin to the music.
The forest vegetation and four burning candles are depicted on the spruce legs in the museum collection.
The decorative items will be on display in the museum until January 6.
Entrance at a special price - 2 euros.
