"Muklajs" chamber choir of Riga Culture Center "Iļguciems" has prepared a concert program "Christmas in the New World".
In two concerts - on December 11, 2022 at 17:00 at the Culture Center "Iļguciems" and on December 19 at 19:00 at Riga St. Paul's Church.
Chamber Choir "Muklajs" together with its artistic leader and conductor Jānis Kokins and second conductor of the choir Ralfs Šmīdbergs will play music by foreign and contemporary Latvian composers of various centuries. The center of the concert program will be two song cycles in a winter mood - "Winter Roads" by Valters Pūce and "Christmas in the New World" by Uģis Prauliņš.
The sound of the choir will be complemented by the string quartet "Fantastic Four" (Indulis Cintiņš - violin, Ivars Brīnums - violin, Ineta Abakuka - viola, Dace Zālīte Zilberte - cello), as well as harpist Ekaterina Suvorova, bass player Viktors Veličko and percussionist Uģis Upenieks. The concert will be conducted by Agneta Volkova.
Chamber choir "Muklajs" was founded in 1989. Since 2012, the choir's artistic director and conductor is Jānis Kokins. Until 2012, the choir was led by its founder Sandra Šmate. The choir regularly creates interesting concert programs, including pieces from the Renaissance to the 21st century, contemporary music opuses and jazz scores, as well as folk music.
In 2015, the chamber choir "Muklājs" released its first CD "Ar Laimeņu runojūt", which contains covers of Latgalian folk songs written at different times and original songs in Latgalian. For this disc, the choir received the annual Latgalian Culture Award "Boņuks 2016" in the nomination "Best performance in academic music".
Chamber choir "Muklājs" has participated in many international choir competitions and won several important victories - "Grand Prix" in Malta, gold and silver awards in Poland, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Spain, etc.
This year has been particularly fruitful for the choir in terms of awards - two Gold diplomas of the 1st degree were obtained in the 2nd international choir competition "Rīga Dzied" and the Imanta Kokara Choir Award, as well as two Gold diplomas of the 1st degree in the international choir competition in Kalamata, Greece.
